Recently, Emmanuel Macron, President of France, visited China. The development of Sino-French relations then received extensive attention at home and abroad. On January 12th, CIBOS invited Miao Rourou, Secretary-General of the China-Loire Society, to give a lecture on “Contradictory Psychology of France to China’s Rise”. Faculties and students of our institute participated in this academic activity.

Ms. Miao Rourou talked about the life of the current President of France, Macron, and analyzed why his support rate had dropped from 65.5% to 49% in just three months after election. In her opinion, the main reason is that Macron has issued a series of economic reform measures, such as allowing companies to hire and dismiss employees freely, changing the wealth tax to real estimate tax, reducing corporate tax to 25%, control financial expenditure in social welfare, etc., which are strongly opposed by French middle class. Then Macron has turned his attention to international affairs. By easing the relationship with the United States and Russia and maintaining France’s political and economic power in West Africa, Macron has emerged in the world spotlight and is trying to enhance France’s right to speak and influence on the world stage.

Ms. Miao specifically mentioned that as China’s economic strength continues to increase, trade deficit between France and China has continued to rise in recent years, reaching 30.4 billion euros in 2016. Macron also has to admit that China has invested a lot in Africa and its financial strength is hard to predict. Facing with the great trade deficit, Macron once appealed the European Union to increase anti-dumping efforts, but now they must cooperate with China in trade and investment.

Ms. Miao concluded that as the youngest President of the 5th French Republic, Macron is very ambitious. Let’s wait and see what will be the future of the France.
